With the wounds from a bad breakup still healing, Penny Parker is reluctant to dive back into the dating scene. She’s especially wary of being set up with an older man, but Ian Pratchett wants the same future she’s after family, stability, and true love. Though all the signs point to Ian being The One, can the timing ever be right between two people born decades apart?

I pre-ordered both books because I love the series in which these characters first appeared. As usual, the writing is sharp and the interactions, dialogue and story are so much better than most. I'm about 60% through Ian's story, having already finished Penny's, and I'm finding that I have to force myself to read that book. I did enjoy Penny's story (with some exceptions) and Ian's story is, arguably, even better but I JUST READ THIS STORY and the different perspective is a little too redundant to hold my interest. I'll review that book when I'm finished, but here's what I thought about Penny's Story.

The emphasis on Penny's virginity got really old. I get that it's central to the relationship (and even features in the title), but I got a little tired of it. Same with the constant references to how superstitious she is. Frankly, it made her seem a bit stupid that she held onto her virginity because of some family curse that she actually thought had the power to affect her life.

The relationship with her parents made no sense to me. Why did she study business (I think it was) in college when she clearly had a passion for animals or science? Even her father makes a reference to her love of science when they meet for dinner. I don't quite get why her parents didn't like her and, from the story about eating in the kitchen with the nanny, appeared to NEVER have liked her. Fine. But then there's all the nervousness about her choosing a restaurant that will satisfy them and PENNY has to pay? On what planet do parents - who are both doctors - visit their child and SHE (a lowly assistant making $30k in an expensive city) has to buy THEM dinner? Whatever. This scene only served to allow Ian to express his outrage and prove something to Penny.

Although I really liked Ian (and, frankly, am enjoying his story a little more, due to his wry wit), I never really understood the attraction between these two or, really, why Sophie would have thought they'd make a great couple. So they both want kids? That's the spark that made Sophie think they should be together???? Yeah, Penny is beautiful and Ian would surely be attracted to that, but I think the 30 year age gap would be a turn-off on both their parts.

Lastly, the whole break up scene seemed very far fetched to me. Penny appeared to get her nose mostly out of joint because Ian smoked a cig with his sister. She never allowed him to explain the story behind what Bill had revealed to her, not that night nor in subsequent attempts on his part. This illustrated, to me, how very immature Penny was and once again highlighted how illogical the couple was.

I did like it because I like this author and she is an excellent writer. I can NOT WAIT for the next installment in Sophie and Neil's story. This one was passable.

First Time Penny Story First Time Penny Book 1 edition by Abigail Barnette Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This was a good romance read. I'd recommend it. It's a well written story in the view of Penny. Her heart felt thoughts and desires are great in comparison to the story told by Ian.
I would probably give this a 3.5 of possible; the book was good until the ending, which felt very rushed. [SPOILERS] Penny breaks up with Ian, for frankly a damn good reason, and then they run into each other at a party then ... have sex and are magically back together? I get this is a setup for the next book, but I feel like it's thrown in there to have a happily ever after and would have been a superior book if it ended with them broken up.
Loved reading more about Ian - what a great guy. I understood and liked Penny a lot more after reading this book too. I read The Boss books first, then the First Time Ian's Story, then this one. I couldn't make it through Penny's story completely. It felt a little like reading the same book again (which it kind of is, since it is just the other side of Ian's.
I may have enjoyed Penny's story just a little more than Ian's. Her personality was so different from his. Maybe a lot of it had to do with the age gap or it was just her but they made a very interesting couple. I liked the fact she came across as a normal human being with flaws like anyone else and the author even wrote her period and all its ailments into a chapter. I was sorry to see both books end where they did. I suspect we'll be seeing more of the couple (at least I hope so) sometime soon. Great read with the right amount of humor and seriousness mixed in.
I liked reading things from Penny's perspective, but I liked Ian's story better. It was interesting to see their relationship evolve on both ends, but there was one particular thing that kept me from rating this with five stars, and that was Penny's roommate, Rosa. It's obvious the author had good intentions by including the storyline of the transgender roommate, but Rosa came off as preachy in every conversation she had with Penny. Her relationship with Rosa is cited as being one of the reasons Penny became less like her parents, which makes her character relevant, so I understand why she was a part of the story. I liked that in Ian's story he never pointed out that she was trans, and that Penny didn't "out" Rosa to him.
I have read Abigail Barnette's "Boss Books" series and loved it. This was equally good and had a similar theme - older man/younger woman. In this case, the age difference was a bit larger, but both the main characters are so likable and so obviously attracted to each other, that you forget most of the time that the age difference exists. And I like that they don'l let this keep them from pursuing a relationship or worry too much what other people think. The sexual chemistry is great. Some characters from the "Boss" series make an appearance, which ties this story in nicely with those. Initially Penny must get over something in Ian's past that involves Sophie and Neal, but that is handled well and believably. Loved this book and look forward to more from this author.
