The year is 1987, and Britain is divided. In Bradford, strikers are picketing and clashing with the police. In the City of London, stockbrokers are drinking champagne and politicians are courting the super-rich. The mysterious media mogul Alek Zenos, head of the Zenos Corporation, is offering Britain an economic miracle. His partners wish to invest - and their terms are too good to refuse. While the Doctor investigates Warfleet, a new computer game craze that is sweeping the nation, Mel goes undercover to find out the truth about Zenos's partners. The Daleks have a new paradigm. They intend to conquer the universe using economic power. The power of the free market!iC*Sylvester McCoy played the Doctor from 1987 to 1996, but is also familiar to modern cinema audiences as Radagast the Brown from Peter Jackson's The Hobbit movies. Bonnie Langford played a companion to both the Sixth Doctor (Colin Baker) and Seven Doctor (Sylvester McCoy), and her subsequent career has included Chicago on stage, and Dancing on Ice. Featuring the Daleks - consistently voted the public's favourite (and most feared) Doctor Who monsters! Just finished listening to "Doctor Who #201 - We Are The Daleks" released by Big Finish Productions!
Spoiler Alert - Move on and don't read if you haven't listened to this audio adventure or previous ones.
"We Are The Daleks" finds the Seventh Doctor and Mel in 1987 - just a year after Mel began her adventures with the Doctor. While he advises Mel to avoid running into people she knows, she points out that is not well in London because there's a new shiny skyscraper that has been built to resemble a gigantic dalek - never a good sign. Sensing the game is afoot, both the Doctor and Mel begin an investigation into the mysterious Zenos Corporation responsible for the skyscraper, and a rather highly advanced game console called "Warfleet."
"We Are The Daleks" is a great story, if you can overlook the fact that it's a running commentary on the "evils" of captailism. Just a friendly reminder to Big Finish Productions - disdain capitalism all you want to, yet I don't exactly see you giving away your products for free...
Strongly Recommended; but I'm taking a star away from being too cute about the political commentary.
Four Stars!
Many Dalek stories resemble each other. To its credit, We are the Daleks does enough to distinguish itself. As has been mentioned before, the story uses a bit of a mash up between Doctor Who and the Last Starfighter as the Daleks use video games sold on Earth to help with fighting their own war.
The story has a lot of great comic moments as Morris goes for satire, as well as some epic scenes. It also gives Mel a really juicy role. Where the story falls down is a lack of logic in many of the character actions and motivations, as well as a script that tries too hard to pull a rabbit out of its hat one too many times. Still, the story was a very enjoyable way to kick off the next 100 Big Finish releases.
